3.13 Mankisan Kōshōin and Fujinuta Falls (Yamanashi Prefecture)

Kōshōin (Kōshō Temple), located in Sakaigawa Village (now Fuefuki City), appears in the 1940 report on psychiatric institutions by the Ministry of Health and Welfare. Fujinuta Falls in the vicinity of the temple was well known for the treatment of the mentally ill. For the purpose of bathing under the waterfalls, the patients and their family members stayed and cooked in the temple. There were also two inns for such patients near the temple. By 1947 bathing had been abolished.

Kobayashi visited around 1974. Matsuno Masahiro, a psychiatrist living in Yamanashi, wrote in his 1998 article “The History of Psychiatry in Yamanashi” that he himself had guided Kobayashi to Kōshōin. Matsuno’s description probably refers to Kobayashi’s 1974 visit.

3.12 Shūgensan Daifukuji and Murota Falls (Gumma Prefecture)

Murota Falls, located in the grounds of Daifukuji (Daifuku Temple) at the foot of Harunasan (Mount Haruna), was famous as a spot where the mentally ill bathed. According to Kure Shūzō’s 1912 article “Psychiatric Institutions in Recent Japan,” the falls were introduced as “Daifukuji Taki Fudōdō” and every year about thirty-five patients stayed for treatment in the temple with their family members. The heavy rain of 1935 brought flooding and landslides that badly damaged the temple, and the head priest, Fujihira Tokuchū, who tried to rescue the patients, died.

Kobayashi visited in May 1972 and interviewed Tokuchū’s son, Tokkō. He saw the medical documents written by doctors and kept in the temple, which stated that, “As for bathing under the waterfalls, the patient should do it three times a day, five to thirty minutes each time.” But bathing was abolished around 1955. When Kobayashi visited, “Takisui-in,” where the patients had stayed with their family members, still stood. This building was later demolished.

3.11 Ōsōji Fudōson (Fukui Prefecture)

Reihōzan Zenkōji Temple is located in the mountainous Ōsōji district in Obama City. The temple, in which Fudōson or the God of Fire is enshrined, has two waterfalls in the grounds. One is over the temple; the other is under the temple. The artificial waterfalls, in which water was drawn by a pipe connected to under the waterfalls, was used for bathing by the mentally ill. According to a report by Tsushima Hideko, “There were more women than male patients. They bathed under the waterfalls twice a day. The head priest of the nearby Reitakuji (Reitaku Temple, closed in 1976) took care of the patients. They stayed in the temple for treatment for about a week.” After the establishment of the Mental Hygiene Act in 1950, treatment for the mentally ill is thought to have declined.

Kobayashi visited the temple around 1975. He took pictures of the artificial waterfalls, under which the patients had bathed. The falls were later demolished.

3.10 Kōmyōsan Jun’inji or Kyūdera (Aichi Prefecture)

Moxibustion (kyū) and traditional Chinese medicine for the mentally ill has been practiced at Kōmyōsan Jun’inji (Jun’in Temple) or Kyūdera (moxibustion temple) in Haguri, Mikawa Province, (now Okazaki City) since the Ōei era (1394-1428). It is thought that some patients were formerly accommodated in the temple. In 1956 the mental hospital Haguri Byōin was established in front of Jun’inji by the twenty-ninth head of the temple and psychiatrist Ao Toshiharu.

It seems that Kobayashi visited several times. He wrote in his 1963 book that, “Both moxibustion and traditional Chinese medicine were practiced here. Its fame was nationwide. Both inpatients and outpatients came from remote areas.”

3.9 Iwakura and Daiunji (Kyoto Prefecture)

Legend has it that Emperor Gosanjō (r. 1068-1072) succeeded in healing the mental illness of his daughter by confining her in Daiunji (Dauin Temple) in Iwakura, Kyoto, drinking holy water; it is said that this is why it was popular for curing mental illnesses. After the Meiji period medical doctors paid attention to the system whereby mental patients were accommodated in several small Japanese-style inns (later called hoyōjo) in Iwakura. These hoyōjo were highly evaluated in that they were similar to the psychiatric foster-family care practiced in Western Europe. Furthermore, Iwakura had the reputation of “a colony of mental patients” ranked on a par with Geel in Belgium. However, most hoyōjo were closed by the end of the Second World War. The tradition in Iwakura effectively disappeared.

Kobayashi was interested in Iwakura from early in his academic career. He visited in 1946, 1962, and 1972. As for his visit in 1962 Kobayashi wrote, “In the grounds (of Daiunji) a mental hospital is standing now.… It is a modern hospital, which does not have the  atmosphere of the former in Iwakura that I knew. I remember the former visit to Iwakura just after my demobilization.… Standing before this modern hospital, I feel we left something unforgettable behind” (Nihon seishin igaku shōshi [A Short History of Psychiatry in Japan], 1963).
